Porthmadog (previously Portmadoc) is a harbour town in Gwynedd, Wales. Originally a centre for slate export and ship building, it is now a tourist destination known as the home of the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways.
Notes on the name[edit]
The original name c.1821 was Port Madock or Portmadock, but this later changed to Portmadoc, the name generally used from c.1840 to 1974, whilst Porthmadog has since 1974 been the official name.
