John was (Buffet) Catering Manager c. 1971/72. He came to the FR from Ferodo Caernarfon, the brake block people, and who likened carrying a stack of choc ices to holding a frigid woman.
John was very proud of the fact that the Smalley, a piece of equipment used on the Deviation, was loaned as a result of a positive buffet car experience under his direction.
There's a very nostalgic picture of John serving out of Buffet Car 103 at Dduallt in the early 70s in Norman Gurley's Narrow Gauge Steam Out of Portmadoc, p.75. As catering manager, he didn't wear the slippery maroon jacket.
