In this more enlightened era of Health & Safety awareness, and incresing regulation by HMG, the function of accident investigation on U.K. Railways was passed to a new organisation from 2005, the Rail Accident Investigation Branch

Its remit, laid down in law by the The Railways (Accident Investigation and Reporting) Regulations 2005, satisfies government duty under EU Legislation to provide an independent investigation body.
