The Coalition was originally built in the 1890s as a steam locomotive. It was converted to run on electricity in 1930 by Llechwedd Slate Mines where it continued to work until the 1960s pulling trucks of slate around the site. When it was withdrawn from service it was placed on static display at an exposed location on the Llechwedd site. Along with similar locomotive The Eclipse, The Coalition has now moved to the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway where it is being kept under cover until the means can be found to restore it. Restoration of the locomotives is likely to take several years and will not begin until enough money is in place to complete the task.
