Details[edit]
An accident attended with the loss of three lives, and with serious injuries to seven men, occurred on July 1 in the tunnel of the new line from Bettws-y-Coed to Festiniog, which was inspected the previous week by Colonel Rich. Two trolleys of platelayers returning to Llanrwst were going full speed down the incline, when they came into collision with a ballast train going to Festiniog. William Hughes, the ganger, was killed instantaneously. Four other men were seriously injured, and two of them have since died.
