Add topicAdding Categories of Photographers Collections[edit]
as the vast majority of photos are credited in the format of test following the photo:
: Photo: <name>
isn't it possible to automatically get categories of photographers collections somehow?
Tim 21:27, 11th april 07
- Tim, Unfortunately this is a manual addition that has to be added to the image, both on the image file and where the image is used.
Adding labels to the end of photos[edit]
The photos labels put at the end of categories are very misleading and not a good idea. Eg: [[ Category:WHR Locomotives| 143 ]]
as seen here:
http://frheritage.org.uk/wiki/Category:WHR_Locomotives
Now, if you click on 143 anywhere else in the wiki, where would you expect it to take you? So, why is there a link here lablled 143 that links you to editing the photo?
Not a good convention. wiki police gone mad again!
I know you love to standardise EVERYTHING, but there is often a good reason why the author of a page does something one way and the some of the attraction of the wiki is that it is from so many different contributors and a patchwork of styles and content. Over editing removes power from the people and will drive them away. You might as well just set up your own website if EVERYTHING submitted is going to be put spoilt to make it fit your ideas of what it should look like.
The ultimate question is WHO OWNS THE WIKI? If it is owned by a community, then let the community have some pride in it and some owenership without over editing.
END OF RANT
- Thanks for your rant Tim, as a result I will now revert all the edits I made to images so that your contributions are simply as you made them. --Stewart 11:20, 17 April 2007
- I have now removed all my edits that I had made to Tim's images. --Stewart 11:39, 17 April 2007
- Having seen what has been done, I cannot agree with it "as it is". I would have thought the idea would be to do bot the Mother and Daughter cats on a page. i.e. Blanche would come under both Cat:FR Loco, and Cat=Blanche - not Cat=Blanche only --Keith 14:53, 17 April 2007
- Reply to Rant:
As you will appreciate, the |143 was never meant to be a link as you thought. *** It is to simplfy the name of the photo when it appears in a category list. It only works on images - not data pages. Not wiki police - just wiki software.
There has to be some standardisation, otherwise there is chaos. If chaos was allowed to reign in a wiki then it would become useless. There has never, touch wood, been 'over editing' on this wiki. There has been one instance of difference of opinion, on the carriages page, which was sorted out aimicably.
There is agreed formats on the world wiki, (policed by the wikipedians) - and by usage, there are reasonably agreed formats on this wiki. (not policed by anyone??) The only time I modify pages is to ensure they follow a reasonable form - without changing any information e.g. where a long rambling prose of a description has been shortend & categorised such as
Harbour Station (Pictorial Views), or correcting obvious typo errors, which I also admit to myself.
Most of the edits I have had to do recently have been due to the bad editing that has been done on some pictures. These edits have been corrected, and then amended again - sometimes causing further errors - what can one do??? --Keith 14:53, 17 April 2007
- In fact on second thoughts - it cannot be even considered as a link as it doesn't appear on the page?? - it is only viewable when editing - at which poinr you cannot use it as a link??? --Keith 15:59, 17 April 2007
