Joe Locke
Joe and his wife Connie were well known as a buffet car duo in the sixties. Joe became a FR Society director in 1964 and served on its management committee as Correspondence Secretary. He retired from the board in 1971 and was made a Vice-President of the Society. He died in 1984.[1]
Joe was born in South Africa into a railway family and arrived in England for educational purposes. He joined the L.B. & S.C.R. just before the grouping in 1923. He was soon after that transferred to Waterloo where he served in the Chief Mechanical Engineer's office. He felt that promotion working for the new Southern Railway would be too slow so he left to join an advertising company. On election to the Society Board he was given duties which would make good use of his experience in advertising and publicity.[2]
