Jon Whalley is either a current or recent Director, Staff member or Volunteer on the railways or associated support groups. This entry only appears as a matter of record. |
Jonathan Whalley joined the staff of the Mechanical Department at Boston Lodge in 1986 as a trainee loco driver/technician on a twelve month contract.[1] He had graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering at Manchester. [2] At the end of his contract he joined the Permanent Staff.[3] By summer 1991 he was Chief Mechanical Engineer.[4] In 1992 as Engineer he assumed responsibility for the running of the whole Boston Lodge Works site.[5] In 1997 the position of Works Manager at Boston Lodge was advertised as the WHR was taking up a growing amount of Jon's time.[6] The next issue of FR Magazine reported that he had been appointed Chief Mechanical Engineer, Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways.[7] In Autumn 2001 he was back at work but on light duties after cracking a rib.[8]
In 2017 he contributed Chapter XIX "An Engineering View" to the book "Fairlie Locomotives of North Wales" by David Payling. In this he surveys and summarises the engineering developments of the last sixty years at Boston Lodge which improved the performance and reliability of the FR's Fairlies and made them suitable to be driven and fired by large numbers of volunteers with, in some cases, limited experience and relatively short spells carrying out this work. [9]
From Winter 2020 he became the usual author of the "Workshops and Running Shed" section of "News from the Line" in Ffestiniog Railway Magazine.
