Thermit welding and gas[edit]
It MAY be possible that a gas flame is needed to heat the rail ends for the following reasons:
- expand the rail ends so that the gap between the rails is shortened to the correct width for the Thermit welding process;
- closing the gap might also be done with a mechanical stretcher of some kind.
- heat the otherwise cold rail ends to a temperature suitable for the Thermit process;
- and perhaps avoid a thermal shock if the temperature difference is too great. FarleyBrook (talk) 08:13, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
