Katherine is a 5-ton, 60 horsepower Motor Rail "Simplex" 4wDM (Builder's number 60s353 of 1968) was built to 2 ft 1/8 ins gauge for use by glass manufacturers Pilkingtons for sand extraction operations in southern Lancashire.
With two other "Simplex" locomotives used by Pilkingtons (Anne Marie and Jonathan), Katherine arrived on the WHR(P) on 14 December 1981. Being in the "best" condition, it was the first "Simplex" to be returned to traffic. It was painted red and the engine overhauled. The wheels were not regauged. With the improved track at Gelert's Farm Works the Loco was withdrawn from traffic and is now undergoing a major rebuild.
