Taxi 1 is a 3.5-ton Andrew Barclay 4wDH (Builder's number 555 of 1970), supplied to 2ft 6ins gauge for ICI Explosives works at Ardeer in Scotland.

Arriving at Porthmadog on 27 May 1993, the locomotive was one of two obtained from Nobels Explosives Ltd, Powfoot, near Annan, Dumfriesshire.

On arrival it was soon regauged and placed in service, becoming a favourite on works trains because of its user-friendly features.
