Dick Hardy was appointed to the FR Company Board in 1977. He had 37 years experience of railway life. He was educated at Marlborough School and Doncaster Technical College and joined the LNER as a premium apprentice at Doncaster. He held many post starting as a fitter at Doncaster Running Shed, moved through the grades of progress man, mechanical foreman, and technical assistant until he was Loco Shed Master at Woodford Halse, Ipswich and Stewarts's Lane. By 1955 he was District Motive Power Superintendent at Stratford and then he moved on to District Running and Maintenance Engineer, Liverpool Street. He was responsible for introducing diesel and electric traction. He became Locomotive Engineer, Eastern Region in 1963. Later in 1963 he became Acting Traffic Manager, Lincoln and then Divisional Manager, Kings Cross and Divisional Manager, Liverpool (L.M.R.). In 1973 he was appointed Executive Member, Central Engineering Training Group of BR. On joining the FR Co. Board he was specifically asked to advise on training.[1] He enjoyed regular firing turns on the FR.

He wrote a book, Steam in the Blood, about his experience of life on the railways up to 1962 and it was published by Ian Allan. He was married with three children. He died on 18th February 2018, aged 94.[2]
