John Prideaux is either a current or recent Director, Staff member or Volunteer on the railways or associated support groups. This entry only appears as a matter of record. |
Dr. John D.C.A Prideaux CBE is currently (2007) Chairman of the Festiniog Railway Company and of the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways Trust.
John first volunteered on the FR in the 1950s and he did an early stint as archivist for the FR Society. In 1964 he co-wrote, with G.A. Brown & H.G. Radcliffe a standard history of the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway for David & Charles, revising it in 1971. In 1974 D&C published John's Lynton & Barnstaple Railway Album to add to the photographs in the history and the two books have subsequently been combined, revised and republished with even better photo content by Atlantic in 1996. In 1974 D&C published The Welsh Narrow Gauge Railway - a pictorial history, an album including some of the Victorian gems from the FR Co. collection. Companion albums for the English and Irish narrow gauge railways followed in 1978 and 1981.
In his professional life John made his mark as Chairman of BR Intercity and, following privatisation, the rolling stock leasing company, Angel Trains. Making the best use of passenger stock is one of John's particular interests, whether by timetabling and train composition or by improving the quality to enable the maximum revenue from premium fares.
