On template:Deviation Locator When using on a page I want title to be "Deviation Locator" rather than pagename tried a few options to no avail Help Please --Keith 21:18, 5 March 2007

Keith - I think I have sorted this. --Stewart 11:10, 6 March 2007

Image page name[edit]

Peter

found a pix title Image:P&p1871frith5118.jpg (5 links) by searching the "Most Linked to images"

However - presume the & is cusing problem as when I try to open it it just says filename="P"

Can we fined the 5 links and rename it accordingly?

Special Pages[edit]

Picture sizes[edit]

Comment in W:The Den Q: R U saying me changing to 755px is wrong? I can see the logic in what you are saying Okay = will hold off further changes in this resepct - all previously done are limited to the Pictorial pages and base equivs at the moment. Can I just put forward this arguement - and request feedback

Unless users have the screen settings to larger than 1152x then there are going to be a considerable number of pictures that will need scroll right to see them whole. Setting at 755 (and I think this affected actually less than half as some are smaller) ensures any screen set at 1024px will get all the picture. Higher res will show an admittedly smaller pix, but if they want full size they can click thru to image page. Lower res will still need scroll. I see it as presenting a uniform / professional style??

As said - no problem with what your saying - just putting another point across Keith 01:02, 3 March 2007

Searching for Images[edit]

Peter - How do I search for the images I have previously uploaded to apply to appropriate copyright notice? Stewart 08:21, 3 March 2007

A manual search means that I think I have picked up all my images and tagged them. --Stewart 10:41, 6 March 2007

Talk Page Header[edit]

Thanks for this Peter - much easier than the Paste/Copy/Edit process. --Stewart 10:41, 6 March 2007

Peter, I have created Template:ImageCaption, however it is still show the sub heading edit tags. Is there any way to surpress these. Look at one of Tim's pictures Image:05-04-03 1edit.JPG, or mine Image:122Comb-060103.jpg as an example. --Stewart 12:10, 22 April 2007

Peter - It might also be useful to incorporate the template into the upload process - but that is probably a future development to think about. --Stewart 12:31, 22 April 2007

FR Co. Pictures[edit]

On the pages I have culled from the old Company website, most of the pics I believe to be from Ian Butters, as an FR employee. However, given the situation in that area, I have never credited as such. This results in "Unknown Photographer". I have just changed 1 to show [[FR Co.]]. Comment please on the way to go on this (also posted to Pencefn id) --Keith 23:08, 21 May 2007

As a result Keith's message, I have adjusted the photographer ID to FR Company on the trial image Image:FRCo-Interactive 2002-03.jpg, and put a filter on this particular photographer ID on the template to point to Category:Photos from FR Company Library. Reply also posted to Peter. --Stewart 00:36, 22 May 2007

Editing Sections[edit]

In case you have forgot .....

If you try to edit a section on a page then that section is duly edited.... However - rest of page is deleted. Also if you use the + option at top of page - all you put in new appears - the rest disappears!!! --Keith

Possible adverse side-effect from recent update[edit]

Peter,

As part of my ongoing work with the copyright status for images, I have added a test to Template:ImageCaption that puts the image in Category:Copyright status not provided. I have put some code into the template that piped the name of the photographer under the image instead of the filename. This evening (after the recent Wiki update) I noted that the filenames are now showing, although the images are in photographer order. Any thoughts? --Stewart 22:54, 3 August 2007

Deletion proposed template[edit]

Peter, I applied the following template to two pages I created back in May 2007 which did not really work.

{{subst:Deletion proposed|Experiment that did not work out to produce template documentation following the Wikipedia example}}

However ever time I previewed the page the template repeated, although I could not work out why when I looked at the code. Thoughts? --Stewart (talk) 19:07, 14 December 2007

Image corruption[edit]

Hi Peter

Having finished updating the words on all the fairlies, I tried to get a copy of an image of Tal & WP that is on the double heading page. It was fine as a thumbnail, but when you expand it, it is corrupted with the contents from the home page on the left side. Whenever you press anything you go back to the home page.

I rechecked this on the double heading page and found the same problem (with all the additional photos)

I tried uploading the file again from my computer and the wiki surprised me by putting the same corruption on my new image as I uploaded it!

Frustrated of Thorpeness

P.S. I have since found this happens on ANY photograph when you double click on it to enlarge it to full size

Page moves[edit]

Hi Peter

Would you be able to move the page Aberglaslyn (Old WHR) to Aberglaslyn Pass. The first page is about the Aberglaslyn pass whilst the second is a stub with no content. The current duplication is daft and the title of the first page is now irrelevant (I guess it was written prior to the WHR rebuild).

Also I previously nominated the redirect page No. 9 for deletion to make way for the Castell Cidwm locomotive article to be moved there (to reflect its official rule book identity). Would you be able to make that move too?

Formatting[edit]

Peter

After a gap of three years I am back onto the FR Buildings as I am working with Eileen and Alan Norton on the Gweithdy project.

I am setting up the Miffordd Station Buildings and somfar so good. However, because some off the entries are so long and because they are centred vertically, those entries that are short are way down in their cells and I want to bring them up to the the top.

How do do this? Does the code xxxxx centre the entries vertically?

Regards,

Peter (Napier)

To centre vertically you need to put the appropriate style on the row. The row starts with |- change this to |- style="vertical-align:middle;" --Peter Harrison (talk) 13:43, 6 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Peter

Thank you. I am not sure I understand and I have tried to do this but with no success.

This is the row that Iwould like to get up to the top

|42

The 42 is vertically centred and I want it to appear at the top of the column.

Sorry - I misread your initial post. To bring the 42 to the top of the cell you need to change |<small>42</small> to |style="vertical-align:top;"|<small>42</small>. Alternatively you can change the alignment for the whole row by making the change in my previous example but changing "middle" to "top". I am not clear why you have the "Operational" column formatted as superscript instead of small. You currently have a blank row between each row of the table with data. Is that intentional? Also the table was not terminated correctly. I've fixed that. --Peter Harrison (talk) 16:02, 6 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Peter,

Have you cnaged something as I have a message nor=tifying me of a change but I can't see the effects? IE No 42 is still vertically centred?

Peter

Please do not create a new section on this page every time you reply. It is unnecessary and makes it harder to follow the conversation. As per my last post, I have changed the table so that it is now terminated correctly with |} - previously it finished with | which is incorrect. I have not made any other changes. --Peter Harrison (talk) 16:12, 6 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Formatting[edit]

Peter

I have changed the superscript to small.

I didnt know that I had a blank row between each row of the table and when reviewing the outcome I don't see this.

I do not know what I am doing wrong but I still cannot get the 42 to the top of the column. At the moment I have |42

You say insert |style="vertical-align:top;"|<small>42</small> in its place but this doesnt work. In my editing page I don't see anything like |style=. Are these hidden?

Please would you show me exactly the line that I need to insert to replace |42 or explain what I am doing wrong.

Peter

DO NOT create a new section on this page every time you reply. I have again removed the heading you inserted. If you want to reply, instead of clicking on "New section" at the top of the page, click on "edit" or "edit source" next to the "Formatting" heading.

|You won't find |style- on the editing page. You need to copy the text exactly as you see it above. The code and nowiki tags are to make sure the text displays correctly above. You don't need them on your page. Simply highlight the text on this page then copy it into the edit box on your page. I have done that for the 42 to demonstrate. I have also removed the blank rows. --Peter Harrison (talk) 16:43, 6 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Many thanks. I can now get on with what I was doing. Thanks.

Citation links[edit]

Hi Peter

Festipedia used to be like Wikipedia in that when hovering over a citation number in square brackets a little preview of the citation popped up and that clicking on it took you to the foot of the page with the relevant citation highlighted. Thanks,

Hi Ed
Looks like an update to the Reference Tooltips gadget broke it. I've backed out the change for the moment.--Peter Harrison (talk) 13:10, 3 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Peter, as far as I can tell this hasn't completely fixed the problem. It does seem to work when the reference tag has as name included, but not otherwise. Ed Eheaps (talk) 17:26, 3 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
I've undone some more edits to gadgets. Hopefully this is now working. --Peter Harrison (talk) 19:03, 3 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
It still doesn't seem to work properly for me. I'll try again tomorrow in case my computer is being slow to catch up. Ed - Eheaps (talk) 20:07, 3 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Still doesn't seem to work. I've tried on my home and work PCs using Firefox and internet explorer. A good example is Earl of Merioneth II where it works for cite note 2 (which has 3 references) but not any of the others. Ed - Eheaps (talk) 08:20, 4 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Got it. This is a MediaWiki defect that was fixed a while ago. However, the fix doesn't automatically apply to pages that have been affected. If you edit an affected page or purge it that should clear the problem. I've just purged Earl of Merioneth II and that now seems to be working correctly. --Peter Harrison (talk) 08:56, 4 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
It still doesn't seem to work properly on all pages I tried. Again I have tried different browsers, logging out and back in, clearing cache etc. Ed - Eheaps (talk) 10:59, 4 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
You need to purge the page which is something you do on Festipedia. I forgot this option isn't available by default. The simplest way to sort this out is to go to your preferences on Festipedia, click on the Gadgets tab, tick "Add a Purge option to the top of the page" (third item in the Appearance section) then click Save. You should then get a Purge option under More near the View History button. If you select that it clears Festipedia's cached version of the page which should fix the problem. --Peter Harrison (talk) 11:50, 4 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
There is an outstanding problem in that it only seems to work when you are logged in. The relevant gadget is on by default so it should work for all users. Not sure why it isn't but it looks like a MediaWiki defect. Everything is set up correctly but it isn't sending the relevant script to the browser. Very strange. If I can figure out what is wrong I'll fix it! --Peter Harrison (talk) 09:12, 5 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
It's still not working for me, even after purging the page. As you say there seems to be something strange going on. It would be interesting to know whether it is working for other users or not. Ed - Eheaps (talk) 11:06, 5 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

The EofM page is working fine for me when I'm logged on. Is that working for you? If it is, can you point me at another page that isn't working and I'll take a look. --5.148.142.54 (talk) 11:21, 5 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

EoM II still isn't working. I tried turning off the tooltips gadget and found that clicking on the citation number took you to the bottom of the page (with relevant citation highlighted) for citation 2 (the one with a name and multiple references) but not for the others. Turning the tooltips back on was as before, where the tooltip appeared for 2 but none of the others. This suggests to me it might be to do with something other than the tooltips gadget. Ed - Eheaps (talk) 11:40, 5 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I've found the problem. There is an incompatibility between the HTML being output for the references section and that expected by the gadget. The gadget's expectations are correct - the HTML is wrong. The problem seems to be a defect within the version of MediaWiki we are currently using so it should resolve itself when the next major version is released. I'm afraid I think we'll have to live with it until then. Sorry --Peter Harrison (talk) 21:10, 6 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
No worries, at least we know why it isn't working now. Thanks for your effort looking into the problem. Ed - Eheaps (talk) 08:07, 7 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Cite menu of editor[edit]

Peter

I've also just noticed that the cite menu in the editor has disappeared. This gave access to the cite templates (cite journal etc.) where you could fill in the various fields in a form in order to generate the required code - an invaluable feature! It would be great if the menu could be reinstated. It would also be good if the Festipedia specific templates for FRM, IM, WHHJ etc. could be included as fillable forms in the same menu.

Regards, Ed - Eheaps (talk) 18:27, 3 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

New user[edit]

James Hoyle (User:JamesH125) has just signed up as user here. His main reason for signing up was to contribute some more of his excellent photos (in the past I have uploaded some for him). Would it be possible to put him on the autoconfirmed user list so he can get access to the uploader. Thanks, Ed - Eheaps (talk) 20:22, 16 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

I'm afraid there is no easy way to do this. MediaWiki doesn't allow me mark an individual user as autoconfirmed and there doesn't appear to be an extension I can install that gives me that ability. He needs to make 10 edits (these can be to his user page - he's got 3 edits so far) and wait until 4 days after he registered. He will then be autoconfirmed --Peter Harrison (talk) 09:02, 17 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

User boxes[edit]

Hi Peter,

Thanks for sorting out user boxes. I came across them whilst looking at Keith's user page. I've created several that all users might find useful. I think I may have messed up the wikitext meaning that all pages where the userboxes are present get added to the "userboxes" category (but I can't see where I went wrong :/). I'm not quite satisfied with the WHRS and FRHG boxes but I can't get hold of their logos so it's something I'll have to put up with...

Regards, RedDragon (Send me a telegram) 17:10, 2 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I've fixed the issue for you. There were two problems. Some pages had a <noinclude> tag before the category link but no closing </noinclude> tag after the category. On others, where the template has a documentation page the categories for the template belong on the documentation page enclosed by includeonly tags rather than on the template page itself. Sapphire[edit]

Hi Peter

A user called Sapphire seems to want to delete a number of items including the FR Stationmaster page? This is not a helpful attitude, and lacks understanding of why some things are there!

Regards

Chris Jones

Thanks Chris. I have removed the speedy deletion templates and posted a message on Sapphire's talk page --Peter Harrison (talk) 14:55, 11 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your action regarding Sapphire et al. As you prtobably realise the FR Station Masters list was written without real thought for Festipedia. References are either from FR staff records or census returns. It would be a lot of work to do as suggested, maybe impossible in some cases. Anyway, as I indicated, some of it is speculation anyway.

Error 403[edit]

Hi Peter

I keep getting 403 - Forbidden errors blocking me from both Festipedia and the main Heritage Group site. It seems to occur after I try and do anything with categories. After I wait a bit it lets me back in and continues working until I try and use categories again.

That license is not allowed on Wikipedia, apparently due to the ban on commercial use and the no derivatives clause. We allow more restrictive licenses than Wikipedia so could include this one if you think it would be useful. --Peter Harrison (talk) 12:05, 1 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Filter "User Creation" from Recent Changes (and RSS)[edit]

Hello, do you have a suggestion of how I might set the filters on the Special:RecentChanges page to exclude the "user creation log" entries?

Cheers,

Edward Harris (talk) 10:26, 27 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

I'm afraid you can't exclude just those entries but there are a couple ways of excluding them along with some other stuff. You can exclude all log entries by selecting page edits and page creations in the type of change. This will also exclude other logs such as pages being moved. Alternatively, you can select namespaces and exclude the User namespace. That will exclude the user creation log entries but will also exclude any other changes to user pages, although you can still see the changes to User talk pages which are likely to be more significant. As there aren't many changes to user pages I would go for the second option. --Peter Harrison (talk) 10:37, 27 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
That seems to have done the trick, thanks. Edward Harris (talk) 11:50, 27 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
I find using the "group results by page" option gives the recent changes a cleaner look. It also groups all the user creation entries into a a single item such that they are less prominent. Ed - Eheaps (talk) 13:11, 27 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Slate Quarries[edit]

Dear Peter,

How do you like the idea of adding a row to the "User Friendly Contents" for slate quarries. There are lots of Festipedia pages for quarries that fed the FR and a suitable sub-contents page exists: "Quarries Served By The Festiniog Railway"

For the WHR quarries I cannot find any suitable quarry pages in Festipedia but there are the following pages in wikipedia: Cilgwyn & Dorothea.

For other quarries likely to be of interest to narrow gauge enthusiasts there are wikipedia articles for: Penrhyn, Dinorwic and Pen yr Orsedd

My idea is that new "Slate quarry" row should should be near the top of the user friendly index - in line with the idea that there were quarries - railways - ports & shipping with slate flowing from top to bottom.

What do you think? MarkTemple (talk) 15:01, 31 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi Mark. Sounds good to me. Go for it. --Peter Harrison (talk) 17:19, 31 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Welsh Pony picture credit[edit]

Hi Peter

I took a screen grab of a photo of WP to put on its page, and as I took the screen grab, for the sake of convenience I put myself as the originator. That photo came from the facebook source Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways so I guess is Chris Parry. Could you change the accreditation please ? It now appears prominently on the monthly picture which is wrong.

Ship of Theseus[edit]

Hi Peter

I see this article and struggle to understand its presence in our database. The database is for facts not exercises of the mind!

Chrisjones (talk) 21:57, 15 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi Chris. It is a little tenuous (and I hadn't heard of Ship of Theseus before) but I can see what Borth is getting at. Are there any original components in Merddin, for example? If not, is it still Merddin? Wikipedia has a decent article about this. Borth is a new user and I don't want to discourage him/her by summarily deleting this page. I suggest you add {{subst:Deletion proposed|reason}} at the head of the page, replacing the word "reason" with your reasons for proposing deletion. That gives Borth (and other users) two weeks to improve the article and make it relevant. If that doesn't happen it will be deleted (eventually!) --Peter Harrison (talk) 22:33, 15 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Ship of Theseus[edit]

Hi Peter

You said you would delete this?

Chris

Done. I don't check the articles proposed for deletion all that regularly but they do get dealt with eventually. --Peter Harrison (talk) 16:11, 10 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
Please undelete this. Borth (talk) 07:42, 25 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
You can recreate it if you wish. It was deleted because the link to the FR/WHR is somewhat tenuous and no-one objected to the deletion proposal. If it is restored I suspect it may be proposed for deletion again. Yes, some historic artefacts contain little or no original material but the term is not currently used within Festipedia nor have I come across people on the railway using the term. There is a much better article on the subject on Wikipedia which could be linked where appropriate. But, if you want to recreate the article and make it more relevant to the FR/WHR, feel free to do so --Peter Harrison (talk) 14:21, 25 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Anonymous Edits[edit]

Should anonymous edits be allowed? Given the rather niche nature of the Festipedia subject, most of the possible contributors are probably already registered, and sign up isn't that onerous. It might cut down on some of the spam too.

Edward Harris (talk) 10:00, 28 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Anonymous editors aren't really causing problems for us. We've had 16 anonymous edits in the last 30 days, all of which appear to be constructive. Almost all of the spam and other troublesome edits come from registered users. --Peter Harrison (talk) 10:21, 28 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
I was more thinking of traceability and identification. The edit on the Catchpole page seems to have come from Israel, which I doubt, and the change comment says "deleted last sentence as incorrect", but not knowing who it is, gives little chance of validating that. Ffestiniog Loading Gauge[edit]

Thank you so very much for this diagramme Peter, it is vital to work currently being undertaken to design an electric locomotive and passenger cars for a proposed two foot gauge line between Dolgellau and Blaina Festiniog via Bala. When they come through I can post the vehicle renderings on here if it is of interest? Best regards, Gareth

Yes, you certainly can. --Peter Harrison (talk) 17:34, 5 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hello Peter,
Hope you arw well... I was wondering is there a very good dimensionned drawing of the double fairley locomotive on line?
Kind regards,
Gareth 185.199.102.246 (talk) 12:27, 7 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
There probably is but I'm afraid I'm not the right person to ask. Sorry. Peter Harrison (talk) 15:26, 7 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

The loading guage is now an AutoCAD file and if anyone wants a copy of it then let me know and I will send it to you. Applying this to the cross section of the Superbarn carriages it seems the car outline does not entirely comply with the loading guage. What would be wonderful is to have all the construction drawings for the superbarns digitized and availible for study amd use.

Flagicon & Regauged[edit]

Thanks for creating some flagicons such as Australia and Wales; I have used a few in "Regauged" but could use a few more. The wants to be a dummy country, say "ZZZ" which produces a white flag meaning "not applicable". FarleyBrook2 (talk) 08:38, 11 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure what you would do with a dummy country. However, you can add any country you want by setting up a country data template for it. See, for example Template:Country data Northern Territory. Just copy it into a new template called Template:Country data <name of country> and modify it as required, then you will be able to use that country as a flag icon. Peter Harrison (talk) 18:52, 11 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
The aim of "the dummy country" flag is to be a place-holder that avoids an error message such as Victoria (state).
Template:Country data Victoria.
Template:Country data Tasmania.
Template:Country data Norway.
Template:Country data Zzz.

Thanks again. ----FarleyBrook2 (talk) 00:22, 12 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Project 1435[edit]

The author of Project 1435 (User:FarleyBrook2) is particularly interested in

Railways
especially railway gauges
break-of-gauge
Voting systems
Wikipedia and similar web sites.

Imagine the joy that he experienced when he found out that the FRHG had a wiki of its own called Festipedia :-) :-) My first post on FlarleyBrook is dated 2015-07-31T09:32:43‎.

Hence FarleyBrook2 joined as a life member Nr.1161. When exactly?

User:FarleyBrook2 has written on railway matters which is reasonable enough.

To cut a long story short, Project 1435 ought to encourage new members to join, contribute and donate.

FarleyBrook2 is retired and has considerable financial resurces; however his Guardian gate-keeps his spending to $Au25o per week which comes on Mondays.

Observe that FR resides in South Wales (????), while FarleyBrook2 resides in namesake New South Wales :-) :-) :-)

Project 1435 has a deadline of a few weeks which I rushing to meet.

I am keeping my work separate fron normal FRHG by using a special prefix in the name of many files.

This is all a work in progress, please, please allow me to continue.

One thing I ask you (Peter Harrison) to do is to add more "flagicon" countries. Fixing this is above my skill level.

By the way, I started with User:FarleyBrook but had password problems so a transferred to User:FarleyBrook2

There is a wiki call BallotPedia but is solely concerned with Ameria and does not seem to be accessable from outside.

To be continued. This is a work in progress. ----FarleyBrook2 (talk) 20:38, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
