Carriage 125 is a Ffestiniog Railway service car in the Super Barn series.

Background[edit]

Following in the footsteps of Carriage 124, this carriage is the second Ffestiniog Railway service car. It was constructed as part of the railway's upgrading of B-Set, replacing both Carriage 111 and Carriage 14 to provide guard's accommodation, a toilet and an improved buffet car. The buffet stores racks are large enough for most stores to be loaded in the packaging in which they are received. The kitchen facilities are so good that even the staff drinks are kept in a refrigerator.

It is currently paired with first class observation coach number 150. The internal layout is designed to match that of the two WHR service cars 2010 and 2011 as closely as possible for consistency and ease of use by Guards and Buffet Stewards; and as such the layout differs to the prototype service car Carriage 124. Externally the carriage is to the Super Barn design.

Carriage 125 entered the Boston Lodge paintshop on the 10th of March 2016.

Entry into Service[edit]

Carriage 125 entered public service alongside carriages 150 and 117 on the Sunday of the 2016 May Day bank holiday as part of the new upgraded B-set. Prior to this it saw use on a number of special trains in the weeks leading up to the public launch. These included The Snowdonian, an official launch for invited VIPS and the FR Society AGM Special.

In June 2017 carriage 125 went into Boston Lodge for a few days for work to try and make the generator quieter. However, it remained unacceptably noisy. Therefore over the winter of 2018/19 the generator was removed and replaced by a bank of batteries. This also necessitated changes to the heating system.[1]
